Une réussite que cet album! J'en ai fait étudier quelques pages à mes élèves, le graphisme est très réussi, et les histoires, courtes et piquantes, m'ont régalée. Je vais acheter les tomes suivants!

Green Manor I: Assassins and Gentlemen is the first in a pair of short (56 pages) books by the French writer, Fabien Vehlmann. I first read Vehlmann when he wrote a story for Norway's Jason, a favorite comic writer and illustrator of mine. The illustrations are particularly well done, by Denis Bodart. Following a short framing story, the book is about a Victorian Era gentleman's club where the members tell stories about murder and perhaps even commit murder, themselves. It's a great collection of mysteries with an overarching mystery involving the framing story. So, should you part with your $10 for such a short book? I did, and I don't regret it. Green Manor is a mix of art and literature you rarely see in comics. I can't speak for the original French version, but the English translation by Elaine Kemp is fine, indeed. Note that although the book is written in French, it takes place in Victorian Era London, and its "re"-translation into English puts it in excellent final form. As we all know, poetry translates poorly, and mystery/suspense translates excellently. That's part of the reason why when we think of great Scandinavian authors, we think of great mystery writers. Vehlmann is a great French mystery writer, and I'm looking forward to reading more of him. ****1/2

I bought this mainly for the gorgeous artwork, but the stories are interesting too. They all center around murder in some way (either plotting or committing it, usually with some sort of twist to the story) but it's all done in a very PG way. There is one skeleton in a story and the Lord's name is taken in vain a couple of times, but otherwise this is about as light and clean as a book of murder stories could be. Enjoyable reading for preteens and adults alike. And, as I said, the art is very well done!

This is a great book. It is a real shame there isn't more work by Denis Bodart available, he is brilliant.

Cinebook is dedicated to repackaging and importing the finest comics from continental Europe. In 2008 alone, Cinebook introduced a dozen new series to the British audience - and judging by the sample set I've read, there's not a loser among them.My favorite of the lot (and this is saying a lot) is Green Manor. The first volume, Assassins and Gentlemen, is a collection of macabre short stories about Victorian murders - each packed with clever twists and an entertainingly warped sense of humor. The closest comparison would be if Stanley Ellin started writing Asterix. The framing device is that all of these villainous misadventures somehow involve members of the "Green Manor" gentleman's club, but, aside from some window-dressing, all of the stories stand completely alone. The writing is by Fabien Vehlmann, who does a terrific job of pacing the mysteries and making sure each is a self-contained gem.The art, by Denis Bodart, is absolutely perfect. He fillsthe grim backgrounds of Green Manor's sinister London setting with a cast of hilarious caricatures. His style furthers the series' ingrained sense of humor, helping Green Manor stay firmly within the realm of black comedy. An absolutely terrific find - worth the wait and the price, I couldn't recommend it highly enough. -- PORNOKITSCH

This slim (56 page) import features six seven-page stories, all of which begin in the cozy, smoke-filled rooms of London's Green Manor Club. Set between 1870-1900, these are tales of murder most foul, but with twists that beg comparison to their obvious influences (Conan Doyle and Edgar Allen Poe being the most obvious). The plotting by French comics superstar Fabien Vehlmann is stunning clever, managing to create stories both horrific and hilarious in only a few short scenes. I'd never come across his work before, and I can only hope that more of it makes its way into English translation tout de suite! Each story stands alone as a wonderful short story, and one can easily imagine them as the basis for a fun television series. "Delicious Shivers" sets the tone by posing the question of whether or not there can be a murder without either murderer or victim. One of my favorites is "Post-Scriptum," in which a man proposes to kill a lady at a certain hour and place, and bets a famous detective that he can't prevent the murder. A more amusing one is "21 Halberds," in which two gentlemen decide to pull off the perfect murder, only to fall victim to bad taste! And the artwork is perfectly pitched to the material, suffused in dark browns and greys, as befits the gaslight era. There's lovely detail in almost every panel, and the characters are expressive without getting too cartoony. Great stuff, highly recommended for anyone who loves the gaslight crime genre, or just good storytelling. A second collection of "Green Manor" stories is also available, and I'll be doing my best to track it down!
